Golden Cluster was created when Jeff Vejr, who is obsessed with old vines and the art of blending wines, set out to work with a different producer each vintage. He started in 2010 in Priorat, with Genium Cellars for Poboleda, from 125+ year old Cariñena, Garnacha, Merlot and Syrah. In 2011, at Domaine Olivier Pithon, it was 85+ year old Syrah and Grenache. In 2012, he took a break and helped Jesse Skiles of Fausse Piste develop his Rhône project, sourcing Grenache, Syrah and Viognier from all over Oregon and Washington. He also started the natural wine gastropub, Sauvage in Portland.
For 2013, he planned to work with Gary Mills of Jamsheed in the Yarra Valley, but during a vineyard tour with Barnaby Tuttle he was brought to the David Hill Vineyard & Winery in Forest Grove to see the old vine Sylvaner and Chasselas. While walking the vineyard, Jeff noticed some huge vines and destiny rang her bell when he was told they were Semillon, one of Jeff’s first white wine loves. Discovering one of the oldest vineyards in Oregon has 48+ year old Semillon in it, Jeff moved his project on old vine wines back to Portland and his current wines are a reflection of that focus.
