The Mas Ferriol’s history dates back to the 17th Century and is typical of the old Catalan viticultural properties, with a walled courtyard, manor house, pigeon loft and wine cellars. The coaching inn building, annexed to the domaine, still stands today on highway N° 117.
In the past, the Domaine Ferriol wines were known to and purchased by Napoleon III and, the Queen of England. Of course, this was well before WWII when German troops requisitioned the property to lodge their horses. After the war, and without any Ferriol heirs wishing to exploit the property, the buildings were abandoned and the vineyards farmed-out.
In 2005 the new owners Isabelle Jolly and Jean-Luc Chossart, eager to become an integral part of their ancestral lands in the best possible way, renovated the domaine with respect for the Catalan tradition paramount in their objectives.
Today, they have cleaned-up and modernized the cellars, converted the large-capacity concrete vats into cold rooms and purchased and installed a pneumatic press and stainless steel fermentation vats.
Isabelle and Jean-Luc have brought the manor house back to life in total harmony with and respect for the environment. They have installed an individual sewage treatment plant, a wood-fired central heating system and harnessed solar energy for hot-water supply.
The Domaine Jolly Ferriol is confined by the Agly River, which forms a natural arc around the property, with multiple terroir characteristics. The Schisty Marl and stony clay soils (marnes schisteuses et argilo-caillouteux) gorges themselves on water during periods of heavy rainfall; parcels of stone-covered land warm the earth when heated by the sun; and the black schisty marl soils (marnes schisteuses) capture the heat and warm the vines, giving a helping hand to ripen the fruit quickly.
Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, maccabeu and Muscat are some of the grape varieties grown on the property. These are used for producing high-quality dry wines, table wines, and wines with the denomination Pays de Côtes Catalanes, Côtes de Roussillon Villages and renowned naturally sweet wines (VDN) of the region including Muscat de Rivesaltes and Rivesaltes (ambré or tuilé).
The sun drenched soils of the domaine also adapt well to the cultivation of olives, apricots, figs and almonds, which is in complete harmony with Mediterranean culture...
The Domaine Jolly Ferriol produces natural wine from vines grown according to the rules of organic cultivation. This approach is in line with respect for the environment, respect for the product and respect for the client. It imposes small yields and perfect hygiene by replacing chemical procedures with physical procedures, including mastery of cooling techniques, steam-cleaning...
